A Complete Locomotion Pipeline

From a raw mocap session to a working locomotion set, using only the tool's actions. Assume a session folder of takes: walks, jogs, runs, turns, and idles.

1. Audit - Check Take

Run Check Take on a few representative takes. You learn each clip's real speed, how far off-axis the actor drifted, whether foot detection works on your rig, and which takes are loop candidates. Fix bone names in Settings now if the auto-detect picked wrong.

2. Cut the garbage - Trim to Range (in place)

Every take starts with a calibration pose. Open each take, note the good frame range, run Trim to Range with Create New Asset unchecked - the original is cleaned in place, no _Trim clutter. Multi-action recordings get Split into Segments instead.

3. Straighten - Align Travel Direction

Batch-select all traveling takes → Align Travel Direction. Every clip now travels dead along +X. (Skip idles and stationary turns - the action rejects takes with under 10 cm of travel.)

4. Fork the outputs

From each aligned take, create what your systems need:

  • In Place → for the blendspace. Travel removed, sway kept, speed recorded in curves, foot markers placed.
  • Smoothed Root Motion → for montages/traversal. Clean capsule path, Enable Root Motion pre-set.

Batch-select all walks and run each action once - the dialog shows once per action, and suffixed copies appear for every take.

5. Normalize speeds - Retime to Speed

Batch-select the in-place walks → Retime to Speed → 150. Repeat per gait (jogs → 300, runs → 500, or whatever your design calls for). Clips now sit exactly on your blendspace grid, and their RootMotion_Speed curves reflect the played-back speed.

6. Make cycles - Make Loopable

Batch-select the retimed in-place clips → Make Loopable. Check the loop on a couple of them (viewport loop playback); raise Loop Blend Frames and re-run any takes with a visible correction.

7. Assemble

Build the blendspace from the _Loop clips. The auto-placed foot_l/foot_r sync markers keep all gaits phase-aligned; place clips at the speeds you retimed to. Turns and traversal montages use the _RootMotionSmooth outputs.

tip

Long suffix chains are informative but verbose. Once a pipeline stabilizes, consider running the intermediate steps in place (steps 3 and 5–6 on the copy from step 4) so only the final assets carry a suffix - or script the whole chain in Python and name outputs however you like.
